Perhaps the BEST piece of fish I have ever had in my life. Get the Jamaican seasoned whitefish, and you won't regret it. The Brownstone is the place to eat in the U.P.! In fact, it's the best places for miles around - if you're driving along M-28, do yourself a favor and stop here. The owners and wait staff know the locals by name after awhile, so when you're a regular, you feel like family. When you're in the Upper Peninsula, you gotta have whitefish. For dinner, I usually enjoy the Rocky Mountain seasoned whitefish, but lately the Jamaican is giving it a run for its money. For $23, you get a dinner roll, house salad, vegetables, potato or rice blend, and a sizeable piece of pescado. I also enjoy the whitefish sandwich and Greek burger! *Also recommend getting the fish on a bed of garden or Caesar salad! On the dessert menu was a killer salted caramel brownie on a pretzel crust, served a la mode. Man oh man, still dreaming about that beauty. The Brownstone does quite a business on summer weekends, so make a reservation in advance! You'd be surprised - sometimes on a nice summer weekday they have to turn people away.

Great stop between Marquette and Munising. Sandwitches are generous.

The restaurant is so cool and has a lot of potential but the food is terrible and over priced. I ate there a few times because of a certain family member who enjoys it there. That being said I have tried a few things on the menu and was dissatisfied every time. I was recently there over the weekend and order a smokey burger. I asked to it to be cooked medium and it came well done. There was nothing smokey about the burger. Other than being dry and having to put a ton of mustard on it. I really hope the owner reads some of these reviews and makes a change.

Outstanding restaurant, very friendly service. We had white fish fillet, nice that you could order a smaller portion rather than a full fillet. Done perfectly. Other order was for a rib steak open faced. It was.cooked perfectly medium. Great beer selection.

On our last night staying in Munising, we were looking for a decent dinner to end our trip. We stopped here late on a Sunday evening with two little kids, and all of us exhausted from a weekend of hiking. Food was great, service was great, and what really made the whole experience for us was the attention and kindness we were given when we informed the waitress our daughter had a medical diet. Everyone was great and found a wonderful meal for her to have, not a typical reaction with our past dining experiences in the area. Not a lot of great dining options in this area (unless you go into Marquette), but we had a great dinner and kind service here! Definitely make the short trip out of Munising if you are searching for a spot to eat!

We were very happy with our meals here. The place was packed on a Friday night, which we took as a good sign that it would be good. The woman in charge, who seemed to be an owner was very happy to make room for us, while still honoring the tables that were setup for reservations. Friendly staff. We had the Smokey Burger and the Brown Lentil sandwich and both were delicious. Wide variety of alcohol options. Great restaurant that had charm. Recommended.

The Brownstone is a nice restaurant that could have a lot of potential. I have eaten there several times over the past 4 years and the food in going down hill fast. I ordered the Walleye piccata, it came poached not sauteed and covered in a watery cooked parsley with one, yes one caper and a lemon was provided. . It was tasteless. 1/2 corn on the cob was over cooked and mushy and baked potato was under cooked. My daughter ordered the NY strip steak, which was full of gristle and about 1/4 " thick and definitely not 10 0z. as advertised, overcooked. All that for $50.00 The waiter looked like a meth head. He was shaking so bad that he broke the cork off the wine bottle. I will not go back, I am tired of wasting money on tasteless food.

The food and atmosphere was good but the service was pretty slow in the beginning. It took a really long time to get any service but after that it was decent.

Enjoyed the whitefish along with dinner salad! The menu offers a great selection with very reasonable prices. The service was excellent from the moment we entered to when we left. Will be back again when in the area!

As good as it gets for the U.P.! Ambiance of an old English tavern and food that is comforting. My boyfriend had a white BBQ chicken and I had a pecan encrusted lake trout. The owner was helpful in our entree selection and the list of beer, spirit and wine was more extensive than other area restaurants. My only complaint is that our server was a little curt... maybe just an off night for her.

I stopped in here for a burger on a snowmobile trip and it was a great burger! One of the best in the area. Its really easy to get to from the snowmobile trails too. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. I will likely stop back here next time I am riding through the area.

I ordered the mushroom lasagna special here on a very crowded night. They seated us at the bar, which made eating problematic. When my food arrived, I was astounded. It was a greasy, cheesy premade 'lasagna' that was served on an old glass salad plate. It was not fresh, and looked like it was just microwaved to order. Gross!! Keep driving to Munising! There, Johnny Dogs, Sydney's, and Golden Heart all have incredible, reliable food. They're also priced lower, offer excellent service, and don't have an hour wait for tables. A lot of people go to the Brownstone for whitefish, but I much prefer Sydney's whitefish and trout baskets. The Brownstone is just an overpriced dive with a built-in local customer base, so they don't really have to focus on quality or service on busy nights.

Very good service, staff was friendly and attentive. Had the Jamaican Caesar salad and the lettuce was fresh and the steak was excellent, not overdone. Definitely recommend for anyone in the area.

Best I've found in the U.P. so far!

The mushroom soup was excellent and the whitefish wasn't bad, but it definitely wouldn't make me come back. The waitress was very nice and the keewenaw widowmaker beer was excellent. However, I wouldn't recommend making the trip out to au train to eat here. Try Sydney's instead as they have better food. Make sure you as them to broil the fish as they will do so upon request.

Unlike the reviewer from Crivitz...I have eaten at the Brownstone Inn more than two dozen times during the past few years. If one can find glee with an iceberg lettuce salad and believe that the dressing is homemade rather than KNOWING it is a commercial base with additions, then I'm glad for you. I will raise my rating one star as the profiterole was noteworthy. Apparently the acne pocked waitress has been excused from there however the surly male owner still was present behind the bar very Shining-esque.

The Brownstone is an adorable little stone house restaurant has caught my eye on several occasions as we drive through Au Train on the shores of Lake Superior. This time, we were nearby at lunchtime, so we decided to stop in. It was a quiet Sunday afternoon and the waitress was very friendly. I enjoyed a tasty prime rib French dip sandwich, accompanied by delicious fresh french fries and coleslaw. My husband had a mushroom soup and salad--said the soup was flavorful but more salty than he cared for. The salad was good (not just iceberg lettuce), as were our kids' meals (grilled cheese, chicken strips, fries, apple sauce). They had some tasty-sounding menu items and I would not hesitate to stop in for another meal. Very good, fresh, and homemade!

Good food, and interesting menu items, like fried duck tenders.

Excellent service! Good food! Best place for fine dining in an intimate setting around Munising. I've eaten here with a small group and have thrown a birthday party here for nearly 50 iin their private room. Both times the service was great and the owner was extremely accommodating. For the party, she created a a special menu that had something for everyone. They provided a lovely setting with white linens and a cake serving station. Even when more guests showed up than anticipated the serving staff and owner kept things running smoothly. It was really the perfect setting! Their typical menu is delicious as well. It has the normal lake fish, steaks etc. cooked to perfection, as well as, some yummy vegetarian options. They also have a full bar and pretty good beer and wine list. I definitely recommend this cozy place to anyone who finds themselves in the Munusing/Trenary/AuTrain area!

Have been to the Brownstone Inn about 4 times on our yearly trip to the U.P. They have a good selection and the staff is always friendly. Never have had a bad experience and we will be going there again every time we are in the area. Recommended.

We had a wonderful dinner! The food was great, fresh. We were having a good time until we were finishing our after dinner coffee and the waitress came to collect our check and told us "We have another reservation at 6:00", pretty much telling us we had to leave. We weren't even there for the usual time frame they alot for a reservation. We felt that was rude since she could clearly see we would leave soon. This just took the wind out of our sails and ruined the experience for us. Furthermore, she wasn't the friendliest person. On the other hand, the service was fine..till the end!

I suggest to the other reviewer to go back and give the food another chance. Two years later I found the food phenomenal. I had duck that was extremely tender and absolutely delicious. Both of my dinner commpanions also loved their food. The salad dressings are homemade and fantastic. I am not a big salad eater but loved every leaf. The lettuce was fresh and crisp, the atmostphere was nice, the main course to die for, wait staff pleasant, and the buiding was really neat. We liked our dinner so much we came back the next day to get lunch. The second day I had Jamaican whitefish and it was amazing. Absolutely delicious. I highly recommend it.
